Today, many people are choosing a ‘Direct Cremation’. It is a choice made for many reasons and it generally means that there is no service for the deceased.
A memorial service can be a simple and respectful way of declaring love for the person who has died while giving those who are grieving an opportunity to share memories, to connect with friends and family of the deceased and of course to say goodbye.
Memorials can be held anywhere, at home, at a favourite place of the deseased, by the beach, it is up to the family or friends.

It was a stunning day – one of the hot ones in Christchurch this year – when a small gathering of family and friends came together to celebrate the marriage of Leo and Natsuko.
The George Hotel in Christchurch is a beautiful setting for an intimate wedding. The wedding took place in the tree scaped courtyard garden which is hidden from the street and gives this feeling of being ‘away from it all’. The reception dinner was held in The Residence which seats about 20 people.
As part of the ceremony, the newlywed couple cut a cake – a beautiful ceremony to symbolise taking care of each other. A tree was also planted – representing growing together, deep roots of love and taking care of this living marriage.
The staff at The George were absolutely fabulous – nothing was an issue.

Vows Renewal Ceremony
A small and intimate Renewal of Vows Ceremony in Oxford Canterbury. Who would have thought it could get so hot?
On the main street of Oxford is the Oxford Seventh Day Adventist Church. A lovely little church with a comfortable and happy history and original timber ceilings, windows and pews.
The service was a gathering of close friends and relatives and there were tears and ear to ear smiles as we moved into the vows and the giving of rings.
Renewal of vows is a wonderful way of ‘cementing’ and strengthening already existing bonds of marriage and for some, a vows renewal ceremony is a way for the couple to demonstrate their love to each other in front of those people who are precious to them.
In some cases, people may marry at a registry office which does not allow for the kind of ceremony and celebration that can be had in a traditional wedding. The renewal of vows is an opportunity for a couple who are legally married to have the celebration and ‘formality’ of a wedding that was not available at a registry office.
Oxford is a lovely little town North West of Christchurch and about a 40-minute drive. Surrounded by mixed farming and on Canterbury’s Inland Scenic Route it is a great place to visit as it has great cafes, restaurants, galleries and more.
